The Woods consists of three residence halls, Birch, Cedar, and Maple, with each hall having two buildings. These six buildings are connected with a central corridor, which is anchored by “The Lodge”. “The Lodge” is a large multipurpose space which features a fireplace, ample seating options, student art displays and outdoor seating. The Woods also has a number of other amenities, including a Classroom, the Student Success Center, study spaces, kitchens and laundries for each Hall, and a front desk. In addition, the Woods is also connected to the Northern Lights Dining facility, which provides a unique culinary experience for the residence halls.

Given NMU’s climate and atmosphere in northern Michigan, the new living-learning community reflects the beauty and simplicity of the outdoors. We incorporated a lodge-type aesthetic, such as rustic chandeliers and decor, which felt more authentic to the University than more modern finishings.
