About Joel

Joel joined the firm in 1980 and became a Partner in 1987. He continues to build a diverse practice reflecting the balance of creative vision and practical performance that has become one of the hallmarks of the firm. Joel’s aptitude for business and hands-on project involvement, especially during production and construction phases, continues to play a major role in the success of the firm’s most demanding projects.

Detroit

Alongside the firm, Joel is committed to the revitalization of Detroit. The decision to open a studio in an historic building in downtown Detroit was important to him as an investment in the City’s future. Located on the entire third floor of the Wright Kay Building, the Studio represents Neumann/Smith being front and center in the revitalization of downtown—designing innovative environments that have helped to attract new businesses to the city.

With over 75 notable projects in the city, the Neumann/Smith team has been instrumental in the transformation of Corktown, Brush Park, the CBD, our Riverfront, and most recently the Entertainment District with the 20 story Huntington Tower.

Community

Joel has an active passion for community efforts and is involved in many philanthropic opportunities in the metro Detroit area. He is involved in the Neumann/Smith COMMUNITY tenant dedicated to volunteering time and giving back to the metro Detroit area. He was recognized by the Zekelman Holocaust Center as their annual dinner honoree and has given his time and expertise to several new and renovated synagogues. Joel has been actively involved in the development of social justice and animal support facilities and is currently Co-Chair of the Jim Crow Museum Campaign Cabinet at Ferris State University. Joel is dedicated to promoting inclusivity and diversity in the architectural profession and continues to make an impact on the firm and communities around him.
