This six-level building, built on a fast-track basis on a very small site, includes offices, classrooms, and extensive laboratory space for training pharmaceutical and health science professionals other than physicians. The preliminary design prepared by another architect was estimated to cost $70 million. Neumann/Smith was selected to reprogram and completely redesign 270,000 sf of new construction within a budget of $51 million
To prevent unwanted access to research activities, the labs, meeting spaces and associated offices are housed in the upper three floors. The lower three floors house classrooms, human performance labs, an auditorium, and a resource library. Four teaching labs include computerized robotic test subjects programmed to physically react to the treatment provided by the student. Instructors can view and videotape the proceedings from a control room. A pharmacy museum and pharmacy practice teaching lab are located along the main floor balcony which overlooks the student commons vending café.
